Tutor International Students in English Writing & AP History

SBC Tutoring & Mentoring is hiring part-time tutors to work one-on-one with ambitious international students preparing for or attending U.S. boarding schools. Strong candidates will have experience in one-on-one tutoring, deep content knowledge in their subjects, and a love of teaching and learning.

Open Roles

AP History Tutors

History tutors work with students taking challenging history courses, especially AP-level classes.

Tutoring may include:

* AP U.S. History, AP World History, AP European History, AP U.S. Government, AP Comparative Government, AP Human Geography, AP Microeconomics, and AP Macroeconomics

* Teaching content clearly and engagingly

* Essay writing, thesis development, and argumentation

* Source analysis and primary document interpretation

* DBQ/LEQ practice

* Support with school readings, assignments, and exams

* AP exam preparation

Strong applicants should be able to explain material clearly while teaching students how to write evidence-based essays that meet the requirements of AP exam rubrics.

English Writing Tutors

English tutors work with students on reading, writing, discussion, and academic English. Typical students may be preparing for U.S. high school, adjusting to boarding school coursework, or taking demanding English classes.

Tutoring may include:

  • Essay writing practice for advanced ESL students

  • Reading comprehension and discussion

  • Grammar, sentence structure, and style

  • Literary analysis and school assignment support

  • Honors/AP English support, depending on tutor background

Curricula are provided. Tutors should be comfortable adapting to each student’s level, assignments, and needs.

About our Students

Most students are Chinese international students or Chinese students preparing to study in the United States. English levels are generally high. Younger students often have TOEFL scores around 95–110 and need practice writing essays before beginning U.S. high school.

High school students may need support with regular English or History coursework, Honors/AP classes, writing assignments, or exam preparation.

Tutoring is conducted online.

Hours & Compensation

  • Pay ranges from $35–$45/hour, depending on experience.

  • New tutors usually begin with 1–2 students, around 5–10 hours per month. Tutors who do well may have the opportunity to take on additional students. Total need varies seasonally.

  • This can work well for graduate students or advanced undergraduates who want a small, flexible teaching commitment. Tutors who prefer to remain at 5–10 hours per month are welcome to do so.

Ideal Candidates

Strong applicants will have:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • A strong academic background in English, History, the humanities, or a related field

  • Experience tutoring, teaching, editing, mentoring, or working with younger students

  • Patience, warmth, and the ability to explain ideas clearly

  • Comfort working with international students and advanced English learners

  • Reliability and professionalism

Graduate students and advanced undergraduates — juniors and seniors — are preferred.
